Building a Compost Bin
A compost bin helps keep organic materials contained while allowing air into the pile.
You can build one cheaply.
Ideal Size
A bin around:
- 3 feet wide
- 3 feet deep
- 3 feet tall
is large enough to build heat without becoming difficult to manage.
Option 1: Wire Bin
Use:
- Welded wire
- Hardware cloth
Form it into a cylinder or square.
This is inexpensive and provides excellent airflow.
Option 2: Pallet Bin
Use three or four untreated pallets.
Fasten them together with:
- Screws
- Wire
- Hinges
A removable front makes turning easier.
Option 3: Wooden Slat Bin
Build a framed box with gaps between boards for airflow.
Keep the Bottom Open
Let the pile contact soil.
This improves drainage and allows soil organisms access.
Provide Airflow
Do not build an airtight box.
Compost needs oxygen.
Make the Front Accessible
You will eventually need to:
- Turn
- Remove
- Inspect
the compost.
Add a Lid if Needed
A simple lid can keep out:
- Excess rain
- Animals
Do not seal the pile completely.
GardenGrowz Tip
The best compost bin is the one you can easily add to and turn.
