Building a Deer-Proof Garden Fence
Deer can jump impressively high and quickly learn where a fence is weak.
A true deer-resistant fence requires height, strength, and a secure gate.
Recommended Height
For reliable exclusion, many gardeners use fencing around:
- 7–8 feet tall
Shorter fences may work in certain small enclosed areas, but deer can clear them.
Materials
Common options include:
- Deer netting
- Welded wire
- High-tensile woven fencing
- Wood or metal posts
- Electric systems
Step 1: Mark the Perimeter
Keep the enclosure as compact as practical.
Long fence runs cost more and create more potential weak points.
Step 2: Set Corner Posts
Corner posts handle the most tension.
Set them securely.
Step 3: Add Line Posts
Space posts according to the fence material.
Step 4: Attach Fencing
Keep fencing tight and close to the ground.
Avoid gaps.
Step 5: Build a Real Gate
Many deer fences fail at the gate.
Use a gate that:
- Reaches close to the ground
- Matches fence height
- Latches securely
Double-Fence Option
Deer have poor depth perception.
Two shorter fences several feet apart can discourage jumping in some settings.
This takes more space.
Electric Fencing
Properly designed electric deer fencing can work well.
Follow all manufacturer and safety instructions.
GardenGrowz Tip
A deer fence is only as effective as its weakest gap.
Check corners and gates regularly.
