How Much Mulch Should You Use?
Mulch is useful.
Too much mulch can create problems.
Vegetable Beds
A layer around:
- 2–3 inches
is often enough for straw, leaves, or similar organic materials.
Loose materials settle over time.
Around Trees and Shrubs
Use roughly:
- 2–4 inches
spread broadly over the root zone.
Keep mulch away from trunks.
Paths
Paths can use a deeper layer.
Wood chips may be applied several inches thick to suppress weeds and mud.
Why Too Much Mulch Is a Problem
Excessive mulch can:
- Hold too much moisture
- Reduce oxygen
- Encourage shallow roots
- Hide rodents
- Promote trunk decay
Avoid Mulch Volcanoes
Do not pile mulch against tree trunks.
Think:
- Wide doughnut
not:
- Tall volcano
Light Mulch Around Seedlings
Tiny seedlings can be buried by heavy mulch.
Wait until they establish before applying a thick layer.
GardenGrowz Tip
More mulch is not automatically better.
Use enough to cover the soil without smothering the plant.
