How to Start a Compost Pile
A compost pile can be as simple as a contained stack of organic material.
You do not need a tumbler unless you want one.
Step 1: Pick the Location
Choose a spot that is:
- Easy to reach
- Well drained
- Partly shaded
- Close enough to a water source
Step 2: Start With Coarse Browns
Place a loose layer of:
- Small twigs
- Dry leaves
- Straw
at the bottom.
This helps airflow.
Step 3: Add Green Material
Add:
- Kitchen scraps
- Coffee grounds
- Fresh grass
- Green garden waste
Step 4: Add More Browns
Cover greens with:
- Leaves
- Shredded cardboard
- Straw
This reduces odors and flies.
Step 5: Moisten
Water lightly.
The pile should be damp, not soaked.
Step 6: Keep Building
Continue alternating greens and browns.
You do not need perfect layers.
Mixing is fine.
Step 7: Turn the Pile
Turn periodically to add oxygen.
The more often you turn, the faster materials break down.
Step 8: Monitor
If It Smells Rotten
Add dry browns and turn.
If Nothing Is Happening
Add moisture, greens, or more volume.
If It Is Too Wet
Add dry material and improve airflow.
Step 9: Let It Finish
When material becomes dark, crumbly, and earthy-smelling, stop adding new scraps to that batch and let it cure.
GardenGrowz Tip
Keep a pile of dry leaves nearby.
They are the easiest solution to most compost problems.
