Vacation Watering Strategies
A week away during Alabama summer can be hard on a garden.
The solution is preparation—not asking the garden to survive on one heroic soaking.
Install a Timer
A hose timer connected to:
- Drip irrigation
- Soaker hoses
is the easiest solution for many gardens.
Test Before You Leave
Run the system for several days first.
Check:
- Coverage
- Leaks
- Timer settings
- Pressure
- Clogged emitters
Do not install everything the night before vacation.
Mulch
Mulch before leaving.
This reduces water loss and helps stabilize soil temperatures.
Harvest Heavily
Pick ripe:
- Tomatoes
- Cucumbers
- Squash
- Beans
- Okra
before leaving.
Overripe produce wastes plant energy and attracts pests.
Group Containers
Move containers together into:
- Morning sun
- Partial afternoon shade
when appropriate.
Grouping them reduces exposure and makes automated watering easier.
Use Larger Reservoirs for Containers
Self-watering containers or reservoir systems can extend watering intervals.
Test them before relying on them.
Ask Someone to Check
If possible, ask a friend or neighbor to inspect the garden.
Give simple instructions:
- What to check
- Where the hose is
- What “dry” looks like
Avoid Overwatering Before Leaving
Flooding the garden before vacation does not store a week’s worth of water.
It can damage roots.
Fruit Trees
Make sure newly planted trees are included in the irrigation plan.
Established trees are usually more forgiving.
GardenGrowz Tip
Automation works best when tested.
A timer you have never used is not a vacation plan.
