Building a Tomato Trellis
Tomatoes need support.
Indeterminate varieties especially can outgrow lightweight cages by midsummer.
Choose a Support Style
Good options include:
- Florida weave
- Cattle panel
- Heavy-duty stakes
- String trellis
Florida Weave
This system works well for rows.
You Need
- Strong stakes
- Durable twine
How It Works
Drive stakes every few plants.
Weave twine around each side of the row as plants grow.
Add new horizontal layers over time.
Cattle Panel Trellis
Secure a rigid panel to:
- T-posts
- Wood posts
Tie tomato stems loosely to the panel.
String Trellis
Run a strong horizontal top support.
Drop vertical strings to each plant.
Clip or wrap stems carefully as they grow.
Height
For indeterminate tomatoes, plan for:
- 6–8 feet
Install Early
Set up support before plants get large.
Late installation can break branches.
Use Soft Ties
Avoid thin wire directly against stems.
Use:
- Tomato clips
- Soft cloth strips
- Garden tape
GardenGrowz Tip
Cheap tomato cages often work fine for determinate plants.
Indeterminate tomatoes usually need something stronger.
