Understanding N-P-K Fertilizer Numbers
A fertilizer bag labeled:
10-10-10
is describing the percentage of three major nutrients:
- Nitrogen
- Phosphate
- Potash
These are represented as N-P-K.
N: Nitrogen
Nitrogen supports:
- Leaf growth
- Stem growth
- Green color
Too much nitrogen can cause excessive leafy growth with fewer flowers or fruit.
P: Phosphorus
Phosphorus supports:
- Root development
- Flowering
- Energy transfer
Many soils already contain enough phosphorus.
Do not add more without a reason.
K: Potassium
Potassium supports:
- Overall plant vigor
- Water regulation
- Stress tolerance
- Fruit quality
What Does 10-10-10 Mean?
A 10-pound bag of 10-10-10 contains approximately:
- 1 pound nitrogen
- 1 pound phosphate
- 1 pound potash
The rest is carrier material.
Is Balanced Fertilizer Always Best?
No.
A soil test may show:
- Plenty of phosphorus
- Low potassium
In that case, adding equal amounts of everything may be unnecessary.
Organic Fertilizers Have Numbers Too
Organic fertilizers also have N-P-K values.
They may release nutrients more slowly.
GardenGrowz Tip
Choose fertilizer based on soil and crop needs—not because the numbers look balanced.
