Setting Up Grow Lights
A sunny window is often not enough for strong seedlings.
Grow lights give you consistent light exactly where seedlings need it.
What You Need
A simple setup includes:
- LED or fluorescent grow light
- Adjustable shelf
- Timer
- Seed trays
- Power strip
Light Position
Keep lights close enough to seedlings to prevent stretching.
For many LED shop or grow lights:
- A few inches above seedlings
works well, but follow the light manufacturer’s instructions.
Adjust as Plants Grow
Raise lights gradually.
The goal is:
- Compact growth
- Strong stems
- No bleaching or heat stress
Light Duration
Most seedlings do well with roughly:
- 14–16 hours of light per day
Use a timer.
Plants also need a dark period.
Use Reflective Surfaces Carefully
White walls or reflective surfaces can increase usable light.
Avoid materials that create excessive heat.
Airflow
A small fan on low speed can help:
- Strengthen stems
- Reduce stagnant humidity
Safety
Keep:
- Electrical connections dry
- Cords off wet floors
- Water away from outlets
Use equipment rated for the environment.
GardenGrowz Tip
If seedlings are tall, pale, and leaning, the problem is usually not fertilizer.
It is usually light.
