Simple Garden Fence Ideas
A garden fence does not need to look like a fortress.
The right fence depends on what you are trying to keep out.
For Rabbits
Use:
- 2-foot wire fencing
- Hardware cloth
- Small-mesh garden fence
Bury the lower edge several inches or bend it outward.
For Dogs and Pets
A 3–4 foot fence may be enough.
Use:
- Welded wire
- Decorative garden fencing
- Wood pickets
For Chickens
Use small-mesh fencing.
Make sure gates close tightly.
For Squirrels
Ground fencing helps only a little.
Squirrels climb and jump.
Use netting or enclosed structures for high-value crops.
For Deer
Short fences usually do not work.
Use a dedicated deer fence system.
Temporary Fence
For seasonal gardens, consider:
- T-posts
- Plastic mesh
- Welded wire
This is inexpensive and easy to remove.
Permanent Fence
For a long-term garden:
- Wood posts
- Welded wire
- Strong gate
may be worth the investment.
GardenGrowz Tip
Design the fence for the actual animal problem.
Do not build an 8-foot deer fence to stop rabbits.
