How to Build a Raised Bed
A raised bed is one of the simplest garden projects you can build.
It gives you control over soil quality, drainage, and layout while creating a clear space that is easy to maintain.
Choose the Size
A practical beginner size is:
- 4 feet wide
- 6–8 feet long
- 10–18 inches tall
Keep the width narrow enough to reach the middle from both sides.
If the bed is against a wall or fence, keep it closer to 2–3 feet wide.
Choose the Location
Look for:
- 6–8+ hours of sun
- Good drainage
- Easy water access
- Convenient daily access
Avoid low spots where water collects.
Choose Materials
Good options include:
- Cedar
- Cypress
- Untreated pine
- Metal kits
- Concrete blocks
Avoid questionable reclaimed lumber with unknown chemical treatments.
Materials for a Simple Wooden Bed
You may need:
- Four boards
- Exterior-rated screws
- Drill
- Saw
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Corner posts if desired
Step 1: Measure and Cut
Cut boards to the desired dimensions.
For a 4 × 8 bed:
- Two 8-foot boards
- Two 4-foot boards
Step 2: Assemble the Frame
Arrange boards into a rectangle.
Fasten corners securely.
Corner blocks or posts can add strength.
Step 3: Set It in Place
Place the frame on the prepared site.
Check that it sits reasonably level.
Step 4: Suppress Existing Grass
Cover grass with:
- Plain cardboard
- Several layers of newspaper
Avoid plastic under the bed because it can interfere with drainage.
Step 5: Fill the Bed
Use a mix of:
- Quality topsoil
- Finished compost
- Organic matter
Avoid filling the entire bed with lightweight potting mix.
Step 6: Add Irrigation
Install:
- Drip tubing
- Soaker hose
before plants fill the bed.
Step 7: Mulch
After planting, add mulch to:
- Reduce weeds
- Hold moisture
- Moderate soil temperature
GardenGrowz Tip
Build one bed first.
Use it for a season before expanding.
